PAPUA NEW GUINEA HARBOURS BOARD CHIEF ENGINEER THE Harbours Board is an autonomous Statutory Body of the Papua New Guinea Government and controls the 16 main ports in the country. The position of Chief Engineer will become vacant on January 1, 1981 and applications are invited from suitably qualified Engineers. In order to allow a smooth changeover it would be preferable for the . selected candidate to take up the appointment for an adequate period before the departure of the present Chief Engineer. The Chief Engineer is directly responsible to the. General Manager for planning, programming and implementation of capital works and maintenance, of the Board’s assets, and to maintain the Board’s interests in all matters relating to engineering. The Board has undertaken considerable development over the past 10 years and this will continue to enable the country to cope with the demands of increased trade.

Applicants should be experienced in the construction and maintenance of all forms of port structures and with adequate knowledge of electrical and mechanical equipment to ensure the Board is correctly advised on such matters. Major works are carried out by contract and maintenance by the Board’s own staff. The current 5 year capital works. programme totals approximately K 45 million and maintenance is running at approximately K 650,000 per annum. The Chief Engineer is head of the Board’s Engineering Department and directs all activities in this field utilising consultants where necessary. This is a senior management position and the successful applicant will be required to assume a degree of administrative resnonsibilitv in all of the Board’s activities as required. . . Conditions of service will be on terms set by the Public. Services Commission of Papua New Guinea at Level 21 carrying a salary of K. 18,510 (SNZ2B;O6O equivalent), plus, a ‘ gratuity of 24 per cent per annum.
