Bookkeeping switch
PA Wellington Parents wanting a hand with their business accounts will soon be able to turn to their children for advice. As “recognition of the economic aspect of living/ the Education Department will introduce the new subject of “accounting” next year, as a School Certificate option. , . . . The course, designed for fifth-formers and upwards replaces bookkeeping — now recognised as too limited for today’s needs — which will be phased out of the curriculum over three years. Accounting will be exam-
ined for the first time next year. Whereas bookkeeping taught pupils the elementaries of cash ledgers and personal accounts, the new broader-based accounting subject will introduce them to everything from “the eight schedule of the Companies Act” to stock exchange transactions and the principles of joint ownership. Another likely innovation is agricultural studies, whicn will be considered by the School Certificate Examination Board at its next meeting in November.
