Y.W.C.A. to help set up youth clubs
Young people in Christchurch will soon have the chance to set up and run their own youth club with the help of the Young Women’s Christian Association.
The association’s executive director (Mrs A. Evans) said the idea arose because there was little in the centre of Christchurch for young people aged 11 to 16. A public meeting would be held to gauge the amount .of interest in the youth club, at the Y.W.C.A. at 7.30 p.m. on August 13. Mrs Evans said that the club, which she hoped
would be opened on September 5, would be based at the Y.W.C.A. building in Madras Street. A committee of young people would be set up, so that it could plan what it wanted to do in the club. Adults would be available only to advise. Mrs Evans said the idea was also intended to promote leadership qualities. She hoped 200 young people would attend the public meeting, but the project would go ahead even if only a few were interested at first.
