Karozshah, Magellan shape well at trials

By W. R. CARSTON Karozshah and Magellan could be winning prospects for Riccarton stables at the Oamaru meeting next Monday if their showings at the Riccarton Turf Club’s barrier and qualifying trials at Riccarton yesterday are of value. Karozshah, one of two runners from Brydon Mills stable in the second leg of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double, finished with a brilliant burst wide out to beat nine others hands down in the first heat of the 1000 m for class four, five and maiden horses. Her winning margin was seven lengths from Hasty’s Girl, which shaded Flying King and Hundred Proof. Magellan, a member of Helen Preston’s team whose two starts to date have yielded a second and a third, was just as impressive in winning the first heat of the maiden scurry. He cleared away in the final 100 m of 600 m to beat Master Mac by seven lengths and record 39.3 s on going not conducive to fast times. Magellan has his first start as a four-year-old in the Trial Stakes No. 1 at Oamaru. The second heat of the 600 m event for maidens was won comfortably by Monk’s Dilema, and Abelard just held out a Sovereign Eagle filly and Music Queen to win the third heat. Go Go D’Or came out best by a neck from Ward Street,

with Fern Bay, half a length I back in the second 1000 m heat for class four, five and maidens, and in the 1200 m event for the same classes victory went to Leading Lady narrowly from Grand Pep. Wats To Come and Sable Coat won the respective .heats for hurdlers, run over 2000 m and ven flights. Of I the two Sable Coat gave a i much more confident display, running the distance in 2min 22.85, to beat Dellarca by a length. It took Wats to Come 2min 28s to get the distance in the first heat in which he beat Pan Jet by a neck. These two disputed nearly all the pace. Pan Jet is an acceptor for the hurdle event at Oamaru next Saturiday. Sharlanza, a Double I Speed-Gate Lucky filly, prepared at Riccarton by T. E. James, had too much pace for her seven rivals in the two-year-old scurry. Sharlanza led pratically throughout to beat Brett by a length, with a Take-a-Risk colt three lengths back, two lengths ahead of a Quito colt. The Chairman and Just a Rebel, stablemates in Dave Kerr’s team, battled it out for honours in the class one, two and three 1200 m. event and victory went to The Chairman by half a head. These two talented performers will probably make fresh starts at the Ashburton meeting next month. The 1600 m event for all classes attracted five runners and victory went to Annfield, but the honours of the race went to Tommy Bar, an acceptor for the first leg of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double next

week. Tommy Bar lost at least 15 lengths by rearing at the start and then ran the winner to half a length. Results: — HURDLES; catch weights; 2000 m.—first heat: ’ Wats To Come, O.
