Gold $603
PA New York The price of gold plunged $23 an ounce, leaving traders baffled as to why the decline had been so sharp. Gold for August delivery dropped $23 to $603.20 ($618.28 NZ) on the New York Commodity Exchange. After the Comex close, Republic National Bank of New York quoted gold at $603 bid. One gold trader in New York said that activity was “very quiet, with no news influencing the market.” The dollar staged gains against most major currencies in late New York trading, losing ground only to the Swiss franc and Japanese yen. 1 ’
