Problems in industry

Sir, — Having just watched the TV programme “Close Up” on the restructuring of the textile industry and illustrating the fall of the Mosgiel woollen mills in particular, I strongly feel that there is one significant area that would indeed benefit from restructuring. In fact, it is an area that I feel would greatly profit from a little redundancy in its ranks. I refer to that industry commonly known as the Public Service. The smug, glib look on the face of the industries commission spokesman when talking of moving parts of the work force lock, stock and barrel around the country in seach of non-existent. jobs, filled me with horror. Ralph Nader in his recent television interview commented how he admired Chairman Mao’s attempt to re-educate China’s stagnant bureaucracy, when he sent them out into the country in shifts to see how the peasant lived and thought. A little along these lines would do some of our “brains” the world of good. — Yours etc., D. C. SHEPPARD. August 10, 1980.
