Smoking in hospital

Sir, — I abhor J. S. Moor’s dictatorial attitude (August 11) and can only

presume that the correspondent has been one of those people who has never had the need of the solace of a cigarette. I believe most people are reasonable and will refrain from smoking when they visit a patient in hospital, but my sympathy is with those patients who are compelled to be in hospital, and are refused the comfort of a cigarette when it could be helpful to full recovery when the worst is over. Regarding Dr Thompson’s reply, I presume he and his colleagues have a staff room, where they can merrily puff away. I was under the impression that a hospital was a place for the care and attention of the patient, not a dictatorship. _ —. Ynnrq- ptr (Mrs) ETHEL SOTHERAN. August 11, 1980.
