U.F.O. debate

PA ' Wellington Six United States scientists will line up for a debate on the Kaikoura U.F.O.s in the hallowed halls of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington next month. • . Three will affirm that the objects sighted from aircraft, followed on radar; and seen from the ground between December, 1978, and January, 1979, were genuine unknowns. Their opponents will argue that the sightings can be explained away to natural causes. News of the debate on September 5 has been received in Wellington by the New Zealand U.F.O. Studies Centre, which

helped with the investigation of the Kaikoura incidents. “Dr Bruce Maccabee, who visited New Zealand to make a study of the.Kaikoura sightings, has written to tell us what-is happening,” said Mr R. Wood, president of the New Zealand groups. Dr Maccabee, an atmospheric physicist, will lead the team arguing that some of the sightings were of “genuine” U.F.O.s. He will be supported by Dr J. A. Hynek, a leading U.F.O. researcher, and Dr S. Friedman, a nuclear physicist, and U.F.O. lecturer. . The opposition camp will be headed by Dr P. JKlass, one of the world’s foremost U.F.O. sceptics.
