Twenty Twizel houses sold

Twenty surplus houses at Twizel have been sold by public tender by the Ministry of Works and Development. “There was not a great deal of buyer interest, and no decision has been made to sell any more,” said the project engineer for the Upper Waitaki-power development scheme (Mr S. M. J. Smith). Most of the houses, which were ■ touted as : luxurious examples of their type when Twizel was built, had. three small bedrooms, a small lounge, and a kitchenette. They measure about 12m by 6m, and are built in opposite A and B designs so that they face the sun no

matter on which side of the street they are placed. The 20 houses sold are believed to have fetched an average of $9OOO each. The cost of moving them 160 km by transporter and having them placed on piles at another site is believed to be about $3OOO.

“One party bought 12 for resale, but there was generally little interst,” said Mr Smith. Some of the houses have already been removed, leaving gaps in the orderly streets of Twizel.

As the Upper Waitaki project starts to wind down, a number of other houses are now empty.
