Golden Bay road
Wellington reporter The Golden Bay County Council wants a start made on the proposed Colling-wood-Karamea Road using [unemployed labour. The suggestion is contained in a remit from the county council for the annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association.
The suggestion has been debated for many years. The main reasons against it have been the lack of reading funds and the declining importance of transport by car. Although the Ministry of Works and Development, and the Treasury have spoken against the road, local authorities in Nelson and the West Coast and their members of Parliament have continued to promote the idea.
