Opposition to tour

PA Hamilton New Zealanders could not pretend that sport was not political, the National member of Parliahient for Waipu, Ms Marilyn Waring, said yesterday when expressing her “total” opposition to a South African rugby tour of New Zealand.

“It is well past the time that New Zealanders such as those men who sit on the Rugby Union recognised that geographical isolation, breeding as it does an insular mentality, does not exempt us from the wider, ramifications of sporting contacts with the racist regime of South Africa,” Ms Waring said. ■ New Zealand could not pretend that sport was not political, nor could it pretend that geographical isolation' meant that people should overlook the international, diplomatic, political and trading pressure that would follow the issue of an invitation.

“As an individual New Zealander, I will use every constructive tool for passive and active resistance to this tour,” she said.
