The Ohau River follows its new path through the Lake Ruataniwha spillway, part of the Upper Waitaki power Project, which was opened 10 days ago. A team of 43 earthmoving machines had to work around the clock for three days to build the coffer dam to redirect the river. The way is now clear for the construction of an earth dam to form Lake Ruataniwha, which the Ministry of Works and Development sees as a recreational and scenic attraction. A motor camp already sits on the "shor" of the proposed lake, which will include an international rowing course.
