Cousteau decisive Kurow winner

Special correspondent, Dunedin

Cousteau which decisively won the Kurow Cup at Oamaru yesterday, is likely to be improved with the race. “I didn’t think he was quite ready today,” said Colin de Filippi, the trainer, driver and partowner, of Cousteau. “That is why 1 settled him to trail, rather than staying in front.”

De Filippi races Cousteau with his breeder Mrs B. Chapman, of Tai Tapu. The six-year-old RegS Yankee — Eastern Charm gelding wifi race next at the National meeting where he could make his presence felt. Cousteau trailed the pacemaker, Bernsay, and was left in front with Bionic Star when Bernsay broke down near 1 the 800 m. Bernsay fractured a rear pastern and she was put down.

A five-year-old mare by Frosty Dream from Kirkwall, a half sister to the multiple two minute pacer Master Nick, Bernsay won three races for Messrs Peter and Delwyn Shand, who had her on lease.

The Shand family had a change of fortune when Aventureaux. owned and driven by Peter’s brother, Gary and trained by their father George, won the Waitaki Handicap. It was 20-year-old Gary’s first win as a reinsman. He is involved with the family training and shoeing operation at Washdyke after working in an insurance office. Miilburn Jubilee led throughout the Waitaki Stakes and won by two lengths from Kokonui, which settled a long way off the pace. Fancy That provided Patrick O’Reilly, jun., with his first win as a trainer when he led throughout the Hakataramea Handicap and won well. O’Reilly set up as a trainer at Huntingdon, south of Ashburton about 12 months ago and has 12 horses in work, mainly three-year-olds, including the promising Royal Stroll. Fancy That is the first horse raced by Mr Pau] Grainger and Mr Gary Counter, two butchers of Christchurch. They bred the five-year-old Truant Hanover Aquarius gelding.

Fancy . That .was broken in and worked along as a voungster then used as a hack at Okains Bay until fast January. Dundas and Young Beau scored impressive, wins in the races for maiden pacers. Dundas tangled at the start and dropped out to the rear early. He improved wide over the last lap and sustained a powerful finish to win by a long neck. Dundas is by the New Zealand Derby winner, Bachelor Star, out of the fine race mare Corwar, which has also left Staveley, West Street and Fair Alda among others. Young Beau, a half-broth-er to the capable Adios

Adieu, and Refluent, led throughout the Aviemore Handicap and won comfortably. Young Beau is one of 12 foals left by Eden's Pride, which died in 1977. He is raced by his Wyndham breeders, Mr and Mrs Jack Holland and trained at Methven by Terry May. Barry Molloy," a Methven farmer and owner-trainer who has been trying" to win a race for 10 years, broke through when Just Sally was

successful in the McCone Handicap. Right Bower easily won

the Twizel Handicap. It was his second in three starts for the Christchurch trainer, lan Cameron, He should not be troubled to extend his
