Tasman expands

PA Wellington The Tasman Pulp and Paper Company, Ltd, is spending $5 million on expanding the stone groundwood mill at Kawerau. Mr D. P. Best, associate director of operations for Tasman, said that good progress was being made with the construction of the two-storey building extension to house two new stainless steel pulp grinders, due to arrive from Canada in the next few weeks. The grinders will be driven by 5500 horsepower electric motors being manufactured in Japan, he says in a statement.

The new grinders are expected to be in operation by March next year. They will bring the total number at the Kawerau mill to 13 and enable an additional 100 tonnes of groundwood pulp to be produced a day, to meet increasing levels of newsprint production. Additional pulp screening equipment will be installed as well as new equipment to facilitate maintenance. The expansion is being designed and supervised by the company’s engineers. The building extension is being constructed by Fletcher Construction, said Mr Best.
