Common bus fare plan

A common formula for calculating fare increases for private bus companies might be introduced next year by the Bus-and Coach Association, said the vice-president of the association, Mr D. McBeth. . The formula would

allow one application for a fare increase to be made on behalf of all private bus companies. This would reduce delays in, processing the applications by the Ministry of Transport and would bring

the bus companies in line with carriers. There were about 150 bus companies in New Zealand.

Mr Mcßeth, who is the New Zealand manager of Midlands Coachlines, said there had been delays, in the past over approvals for fare increases. Some North Island companies had been affected badly by the delays. The managing director of Newmans Coach Lines, Mr G. K. Chapman, said :his. company had had “satisfactory service” from the Ministry. It would not be a simple job to process so many applications.

The common formula would not benefit Newmans as much as smaller companies- because, Newmans’ accounting system could accomodate any delay in the processing of fare-increase applications? : ■ ■-.
