More ships this year than last
Between October 1, 1979, and July 28 this year, the port of Lvttelton accommodated 448 trading vessels, compared with <123 in the previous corresponding period, according to the harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour. This represented an increase in net register tonnage of 80,508 tonnes over the 1978-79 year, he said.
Visits b5 r overseas vessels Increased, but visits by coastal ships declined. A total of 237 overseas vessels used the port, compared with 216 in the previous year. In July, 15 ships arrived at Lyttelton directly from overseas ports, including Japan, Singapore, Tonga, Nauru, Aden, Fiji, Iran, Australia, and Christmas Island. Four vessels sailed from Lyttelton direct for Australian ports: the Strathmay and the Flinders Bay for Sydney; the Iron Baron for Adelaide; and the Iron Arnhem for Bell Bay, Tasmania.
Between June 24 and July 28, 43 vessels' were helped Into the port by tugs of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, 39 were assisted in departing, and 10 were helped to shift within the harbour.
