Last-gasp win for Manawatu
PA Invercargill A last-minute try by a wing, John Dyson, gave Manawatu a 13-10 win over Southland in a first division championship rugby match at Invercargill. Southland showed It will be a force to be reckoned, with in its coming Ranfurly Shield challenge. A strong, well drilled pack pressed Manawatu’s scrum, and Southland’s first-half try by the All Black flanker, Leicester Rutledge, came after traditional Southland driving close to Manawatu’s line. Frank Oliver dominated line-outs, but Manawatu was not allowed leeway to use fully its feast of possession. For Manawatu, Geoff Old came into his own in the second half with driving runs from line-outs and rucks.
Southland’s captain, Brian McKechnie left the field soon after half-time with a back injury'. Scorers, — Manawatu:
