Masterton-Chch air link?
PA Wellington An eight-seater Japanesebuilt aircraft is being readied to give Masterton people daily direct air links to Auckland and Christchurch.
A new company, Wairartpa Airlines, is the latest to join what may become a boom for small computerstyle airlines as Air New Zealand prepares to pull out of unprofitable routes. The new company, working with the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club, has acquired a Mitsubishi 2 aircraft.
The twin-engine turbo-prop could fly from Masterton to Auckland in an hour. Masterton to Christchurch could be covered in 55 minutes. The aero club’s commercial arm will run the $500,000 plane. The club’s secretary (Mr I.
Robinson) has said that daily direct flights were planned between Masterton and Auckland early in the mornings, and MastertonChristchurch flights would leave at 11 a.m.
The clubs also hoped to run an evening service to Auckland which would give Masterton passengers a full day there.
The pressurised MU2 will cruise at between 500 and 590 km/h depending on altitude. Mr Robinson said a start in October was planned for the new service, which must be sanctioned by the Govern-ment-appointed Air Services Licensing Authority. An authority official said in Wellington yesterday that the application to run the new service should be heard in September.
