The successful Awapuni horseman, Michael Gillies, gives the thumbs up signal from his bed in Christchurch Hospital last evening. Gillies fractured his left leg in a fall from Rabalam at the first flight in the Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton on Saturday. About 45min earlier, he had won the Koral Steeplechase on Guess Who. Gillies is no newcomer to adversity. He was out of action for several months last season with a compound fracture of the same leg. Report, page 26.
