Keeping pace

It was not only a number of Canterbury players who were having a second game in two days at Lancaster Park yesterday. The number was, in fact; five and it was enlarged to six when Gary Barkle replaced Steve Scott midway through the second half. Scott received an ankle injury, but it is not thought to be serious.

The others players who had turned out on Saturday were Ross Gibson, KieranKeane and Peter McLaren (all, like Barkle, involved in the C.S.B. Trophy final) and Graeme Higginson and Jock Ross, who contested a subunions match.

In the same category was the referee, Mr; T. F. Doocey, who on Saturday controlled the division one match - between Otago and South-Canterbury at Dunedin;

“If players can do it, so can referees," said Mr Doocey with a smile. Mr Doocey controlled yesterday’s match with his customary competence, drawing attention to himself only when he ran on the field sporting a new, more colourful stripe that Canterbury referees usually adopt.
