First harrier victory for Keeley

The Rovers harrier, Brian Keeley, who is 34, started running when he was 12 years old, but until Saturday had not won a harrier race.

On Saturday he lined up with more than 20b senior men in the annual Governor’s Bay to Lyttelton handicap 10km road race and, from a handicap 9mln behind go, came through to lead at the Bkm mark and held on to win by more than a. minute. Keeley said yesterdaj’ that he bad “just clicked.’’ Assisted by ideal weather he recorded a brisk 35min 40sec for the distance, about 100 metres short of 10km.

Second was A. Perry (Toe H), who started a minute ahead of Keelev. Third was Derek Brittenden (St Martins) who came strongly through from 13:30 behind the front markers. In the veteran men’s handicap race Brian Clemens (Technical) shook off three comarkers on the 2min handicap to win by nearly Imin from J. Glasgow (New Brighton). Doug Marquet (St Martins) off smin behind, beat his clubmate. M. Hawkins, to the cost in the junior event by ssec, after giving him a start of smin. The third-place getter, J. Rogal (United) recorded secondfastest time. St Martins also had a victory in the women’s event, when Judy Foster took the lead from R. Nicholson (Olympic) shortly before the finish. Her clubmates, L. Thompson and A, O’Loughlin, finished third and fourth. More than 60 women competed. Fastest time in the women’s race went to Margaret Walker, also of St Martins, who was backmarker. She recorded a faster time than Christine Burden (University) who in the Sedley Wells marathon recently broke the 3hr mark. Miss Walker’s time was 49:46, Mrs Burden’s 39:55 and Ann Kennedy (Ladies Pioneer) had third-fastest time of 40:31. Margaret Flanagan showed improved form to take fifthfastest time, of 40:43. only ssec slower than the accomplished Sue Taylor (St Martins). Tony Good (Olympic) took unofficial fastest time in the men’s race. He started from the back mark with Mel Radcliffe (New Brighton) and Eddie Grav (Greymouth). He recorded 29:02. compared with Radcliffe’s 29:53 and Gray’s 32:15. Good’s result is subject to dispute. Several runners who were not entered caused headaches for the organisers trving to compute the results. Their numbers did not show up

on the list of entries and they were disqualified, but Good_s name is so well known that it was confirmed'he had entered but apparently wore the wrong number. „ , Results.—Men: B.
