A total of 235 passengers bound for Sydney were d e 1 a y e d r in Christchurch for more than six hours yesterday, after an Air New Zealand DCIO was forced to return to Christchurch Airport. Mr Kevin Berry, an Air New Zealand maintenance engineering supervisor, is shown inspecting one of
the aircraft’s engine fan blades, .which, were damaged when the DCIO flew into a flock of birds on take-off. Flight 175 took off about 11 ami., but returned to Christchurch 11 minutes later after a bird was drawn into the port engine. The pilot dld -a circuit t»f the ' airport- and *-- landed'safely. An inspection of the air-
craft showed that only the fan blades were damaged. Replacement blades were sent ..from Auckland. . Flight 176 from Sydney, which landed about midday, was used to carry the passengers from the abandoned flight <to Sydney. They left at 5.30 pan. - A-The damaged jet was to proceed to'Auckland after repairs were completed.
