Buller hopes for another coal deal

Westport reporter An export deal involving the sale of a further 200,000 tonnes of Buller coal annually could be signed as a result of a visit to Stockton yesterday of a trade delegation from South Korea. The delegation was led by South Korea’s Minister of Industry and Commerce (Mr Shin Byong Hyun) and accompanied by the republic’s Ambassador in New Zealand (Mr Chun Suong Lee).

Also in the group of New Zealand and Korean officials who arrived by R.N.Z.A.F. Andover aircraft ■ yesterday morning was Mr K. S. Hong, of the Pohang Firon and Steel Company. This company recently tested samples of Stockton coal and although the State Coal Department sales manager (Mr J. Smith) says it is “early days yet,” hopes are high for an export contract.

Mr Hyun spent an hour yesterday afternoon discussing animal breeding programmes in New Zealand with staff at Lincoln College. Mr Hyun, the former governor of the Bank of Korea, was appointed South Korea’s Minister of Commerce and Industry on July 5.
