Cousteau picked to win Kurow Cup
By
G. K. YULE
A win at Rangiora, followed by seconds to Dreamy Dragon and Royal Tempo, all in June and at his latest three starts, point to the prospects of Cousteau in the Kurow Cup at Oamaru on Monday.
He confirmed those showiings when he finished fourth without being pressed behind Scholar at the Addington trials last Wednesday. Cousteau has a sound form background on grass tracks jand he looks favourably (placed on the front. i Bernsay showed splended form on grass tracks on the • winter circuit in Canterbury and Nelson and Blenheim and | she will not be concerned ■if the track is on the slow ’.side at Oamaru. After winning at Blenheim, she did well for fourth over 2600 m at Addington on July 19.
Nugget's form background is far from encouraging, but he heralded a bold showing in this race when he ran his stablemate, Sovereign, to half a head at last weeks trials. He has shown his best foirn on slow grass tracks and could have conditions to suit on .Monday.
The chances of success for Washdyke stables will be heightened by Elite Del, a grand third to Capinsay at Blenheim on June 21 after starting from 40m. She is bred to handle winter conditions, being by Armbro Del (rom a noted mudlark in Torrent. Should the track be heavy there will be justifiable strong support for Dreamy Rosa, a last-start winner at Ashburton in June, while Bionic Star and Gilnockie Tower will also be entitled to consideration. ■ ■
