Market at new peak
The Australian sharemarket closed on a record allordinaries peak yesterday in another strong session dominated by. sugar and Cooper Basin Gas stocks.
Santos finished the day 170 c higher at $14.20, and Vamgas added 70c to 700 c in a rush into energy situations which also improved the coal, uranium and shale oil sectors.
Uranium stocks Pancontinental and Queensland Mines each added 20c to 710 c and 870 c and the coal major, Utah, gained 12c to 5120 despite indications that the Queensland coal strike was likely to continue.
Another improvement in sugar prices overnight pushed CSR 8c higher to 756 c; Pioneer firmed 10c to 360 c and Bundaberg added 5C to 365 c.
Howard Smith, with both : coal and sugar interests, i closed 40c higher at 910 c i and metal miners were, generally better despite a lack of movement on world gold and base metal markets. In other trading, Peko rose 4c at 850 c, Western ' Mining firmed 16c to 566 c. MIM put on 8c to 506 c, Hamersley was 10c higher at 440 c, Consolidated Gold Fields added 12c. io 860 c,
CRA advanced 4c to 550 c, and BHP rose 10c to $15.10. Gold stocks were strong despite the stagnant state of world markets. Central Norseman finished 30c higher at $11.60. Most of the shale oil action was confined to second line stocks; Greenvale and Esperance each added 10c to 405 c and 460 c. respectively.
The industrial area continued to improve and perfor'mers included James Hardie, (which rose another 10c to ‘425c in the wake of a decision to unload its Canadian asbestos interests.
