Price rise for linseed growing

Farmers are being offered 5225 a tonne for linseed of fair average quality grown under contract in Canterbury and North Otago in the coming season. This is an increase of 32 per cent. Growers have been advised of this in a letter from the procurement company, Linseed Growers, Ltd. in association with the rhe Dunedin linseed processor, Fletcher Agriculture.

A bonus system will continue for high quality seed and this- could take the price to $235 a tonne or more, according to the letter to growers, from the general manager of Fletchers Mr K. M. Doyle.

Similarly, there would be a penalty system for below average seed, he said.

Fletcher Agriculture's; drying facilities at Dunedin would again allotv them to accept out-of-condition seed, tvhich would be helpful to contract growers if

(here was another poor harvesting season next year.

Mr Doyle said that to enable the company to assess its position as soon as possible, all intending growers for next season would need to signify their intentions to seed merchants by the end of August.

Contracts for the -new season, he said, would -allow for an alternative choice of seed since the new earlier maturing variety, Hinu, developed by the Crop Research Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research at Lincoln, would be available for the first time in limited quantities. Mr Doyle said that the new variety,, basically bred from Redwood, which was commonly grown in New Zealand, would be.of most help in wetter areas and careful monitoring of crops of it would be undertaken by Fletcher Agriculture’s field staff to ensure that its full yield potential was realised.
