Easy Australian market

Trading on Australian stock exchanges .ended on the downswing again yesterday — a smattering of situation stocks providing the only encouraging note to dwindling overseas interest, and a disappointing annual result from BHP. The market leader’s 23.6 per cent profit rise to $220.9 million was as much as $3O million below widely-held predictions, and the stock fell 45c to, $14.60 dollars, after falling to $14.50 with the announcement. Elsewhere, another drop in U.S.. prime rates lifted _ a wide selection of speculative gold stocks, but major producers tended to drift with the rest of the major mining sector after an overnight drop in metal prices.

’ The tin . miner. Renison, led the. miners with, a 300 c rise to $23 after repotting a 13 per cent profit increase for the year, to $27.5 million and Mount Lyell rose 15c to 200 c. on reporting a profit rise to $5.4 million, from $428,000. Oil and gas stocks were generally weaker, although investors showed some new confidence in the Lesueur No. 1 well in the Bonaparte Gulf and pushed Oil Investments stock 8c higher to 249 c.

Boungainville was the only major gold producer to make a gain on the day, with a 2c rise to 264 c, but the leading stock, Central Norseman, . lost 50c Jo $lO.BO. .
