Shipping News Safety convention now in-force

After six years- of international high-level talks, one of the most important agreements devised on marine safety has finally come into force — the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (5.0.L.A.5.).» . t'’ • The agreement, first proposed in 1974 by the Inter-Governmen-tal Maritime Consultive Organisation, was accepted last year by 25 countries representing more than 50 per cent of the world’s merchant shipping tonnage. Under the.- organisation’s rules an additional year, had to be allowed to permit contracting nations to enact necessary legislation. The S.O.L.AiS. convention is the latest in a series of safety agreements dating back to before World War 1, The first was prompted by the Titanic disaster in 1914 and brought up to date in 19S0. Among other provisions, the new convention allows a contracting nation to inspect the ship of another signatory state if there are reasons to suspect that all safety provisions have not been met. The agreement also covers topics such as ship stability and subdivision, machinery and electrical installations, fire protection. life saving equipment, communications. navigation, nuclearpowered ships, and the carriage of grain and dangerous goods.
