‘Fast track’ for methanol plant?
PA Wellington The Minister of National Development (Mr Birch) confirmed yesterday that he had received formal application to have the provisions of the National Development Act applied to the proposed “stand alone" methanol plant in north Taranaki. The application has been submitted in the name of Petralgas Chemicals N.Z., Ltd. The shares in this new company will be held by the Petroleum Corporation of New Zealand, Ltd, or its nominees. Forty-nine per cent of the shareholding will be taken up by AlbSrta Gas and Chemicals, Ltd, when all the necessary agreements have been formalised. The balance of the shareholding will continue to be held by Petrocorp
and other New Zealand investors. Contained in the application is a general description of the methanol production process and a description of the site of the proposed plant, with reasons jwhy it was preferred and why the project is considered to meet the criteria set out in the act. The application also sets out the particulars required for such purposes as obtaining subdivision approval, town planning consent, pipeline authorisation, water rights, rights under the Clean Air Act, and other consents. Mr Birch said he would now consult the Taranaki United Council and other appropriate statutory authorities before any further action was taken in terms of the National Development Act.
