Ferry row flares
PA Wellington The relativity row between rail ferry deck and engineering officers is on again. The Railways Department and the officers’ union, the Merchant Service Guild, will meet today to discuss a guild claim for an extra deck officer on each crossing. Marine engineers are “extremely disturbed” by what they allege is an attempt to circumvent their longstanding claim for parity with deck officers.
The secretary of the Institute of Marine and Power Engineers, Mr D. Munro, wrote to the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger) and the General Manager of Railways (Mr T. M. Hayward) yesterday saying the engineers reserved the right to take further action if necessary. Mr Munro said he had been extremely concerned to learn, by accident, that the guild and the department would meet today. He said they had agreed that a conciliator, Mr J, Button, would hear the case, travel in the ferries, and have the power to make a final decision binding on both parties.
