Huge score in hockey
NZPA Moscow The first practical evidence of the Olympic Games’ being “devalued” because of the mass boycott by Western nations was provided on the hockey field on Sunday.
In an obvious mismatch to start the Olympic tournament, six-time champions India crushed Tanzania by 18 goals to nil, after leading 12-nil at half-time.
Tanzania was one of the countries brought into the tournament after the seeded nations, including the 1976 champions, New Zealand, dropped out It was the heaviest defeat inflicted in an Olympic match since the Los Angeles Games in 1932 when India — on the way to the first of its gold medals — beat the United States by 24-1.
