Living costs
Sir, — A recent official survey (“The Press,” July 19) states that it costs New Zealand householders $202 weekly on average for a family of three to live. A ■breakdown of the figures shows that food costs $38.07. This means that some families of three spend less than $3B a week on food. I find it incredible that three people can eat so cheaply. They must have a very mean and hungry look about them. They must be living on little more than the smell of an oily rag. It costs me at least $3O weekly to feed myself on meat, vegetables, eggs, bacon, fruit, bread, tea, coffee, margarine, marmalade; milk, cream, desserts, soups, fish, poultry, etc. The cost of food for three adults would be at least $7O a week,, surely. Averages are very misleading. People who moan about food prices are. usually those who drink, smoke, or breed excessively. “Cut your coat according to your cloth.” — Yours, etc., R. J. BURNS, Lyttelton. July 19, 1980.
