Imports exceed exports

PA Wellington New Zealand spent $4l million more on imports than it earned through exports during June, according to the Government Statistician (Dr J. H. Darwin). He said yesterday that preliminary trade figures showed exports during the month were valued at $443 million, but imports cost $484 million. A major factor in the difference was the $35 million which it cost the New Zealand Shipping Corporation to buy the N.Z. Caribbean. In June, 1979, imports cost $4152 million and exceeded exports by $7.2 million. In the 12 months ended June 30, New Zealand had a surplus from exports over imports of $7.4 million, compared with a surplus of $241.7 million the previous year. The provisional figures show New Zealand earned $5140.5 million ($4067.4 million in 1978-79) from exports during the year and snent $5133.1 million ($3826.9 million) on imports.
