Naming of tour vice-captain delayed

The appointment of the vice-captain and selectors of the New Zealand cricket team to tour Australia later this year has been delayed until September 1, This decision was reached by the New Zealand Cricket Council’s board of control at the week-end. September 1 is the deadline date for Glenn Turner to decide on his availability and for Mark Burgess to prove his fitness fjr the tour.

The team will have a pretour assembly in Christchurch on September 26 and will leave for Melbourne a month later. There the side will have almost five days intensive practice before its first match. A grant of 510,220 from the New Zealand Sports Federation has helped make this possible. A reply to a letter from the chairman of the New Zealand board of control (Mr R. A. Vance) was received from the West Indies board of control. However, it was taken in committee and Mr Vfence reported that he and Mr W. A. Hadlee would pursue the matter of the conduct of the touring team at the International Cricket Conference next month. Mr Vance and Mr Hadlee will be having discussions with the West Indies board of control president, Mr Jef-

frey Stoilmeyer and another senior official. The tour of New Zealand by the West Indies resulted in a net profit of 525,000 after paying the West Indies their agreed share. The board of control intends spending more than $45,000 on coaching next season. About $43 ( 000 was spent last season with considerable assistance given by the Ministry of Recreation and Sport and Lion Breweries through grants of $17,200 and $2875, respectively. It was agreed that boundaries should be at least 50m from the centre of the pitch. Playing hours for the Shell series will be between 10.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. with captains given the right to stop the match half an hour earlier on the final day if no result seems likely. A win will be worth 12 points and a tie will be worth six points to each team, an increase of one point from last season. If a side batting last equals the score of its opponent and still has wickets remaining, the result will be a draw with only performance points counting. The final of the Shell Cup (the one-day round-robin competition) will be televised on February 8. The venue will be the reverse of where the two finalists met in the first round. Playing conditions for the Shell Cup wil be the same as those adopted for the one-day tournament last season. A win will be worth four points and each team will receive two points should the match be abandoned. Should it be necessary to hold a count-back to determine the finalists, the number of wins will be the first consideration. If two teams have the same number of wins, the team with the better differential of runs for and against will gain a place in the final. Approval was given for the distribution of prize money for the Shell series. The winner of the Shell Trophy will receive $2000; the runner-up, $1000; and the third place-getter, $5OO. Wins will be worth $l2O and the man of the match will get $lOO. The Shell Cup winner will receive $lOOO and the runner-up $5OO.
