Merit awards made to classers

Four wool classers were recently presented with merit awards for outstanding clip preparation by the .Wool Board field services group manager, Mr Sandy Cassie. They are (from left) Mr Graham Nell (Darfield), Mr Bill Norman (Masterton), Mr Charles Bedford (Christchurch) and Mr Owen Petrie (Palmerston North). Messrs Nell and Norman are both registered

owner classers, and Messrs Bedford and Petrie are registered shed classers. Merit awards are made by the Wool Board annually for the presentation and style of classing detected by board appraisers when valuing clips prior to auction. To qualify the recipients must be registered classers and their bales branded with the distinctive Kiwi stencil. In making the presenta-

tions of landscape water colour, paintings by Colin Wheeler, Mr Cassie said a high standard of classing enhanced New Zealand’s overseas reputation as a wool exporting country. “For the greater part of our export wool, the class-

ing and preparation in the wool shed is the only quality control. for our product,” Mr Cassie said. “After it is packed in the woolshed it is not generally touched again until it reaches its destination at a mill.”
