Lighthouse men plan new moves
PA Wellington Details of further action planned by lighthouse keepers to highlight their dispute with the Government. over the proposed automation of lighthouses will probably, be revealed on Monday. The Public Service Association, is handling the keepers’ .case. Its executive has considered a recommendation By the keepers about what . should be done next. •This followed a rejection by the Government on! July 1,4 of the keepers’, request for a public inquiry into the reasons behind the decision
to automate all lights by 1986. The lighthouse keepers’ recommendation had been a complicated one, a P.S.A. spokesman said yesterday.. “Details cannot be made public now. We are preparing a news backgrounder for a press conference eariy next week — probably Monday.” Lighthouse keepers are among the first victims of technology and all New Zealanders should support their call’for. a commission of inquiry into lighthouse automation, -according to Labour’s shadow Minister of Labour (Mr T. K. Burke).
