Mosgiel sackings begin
PA Dunedin The first 145 members of the Mosgiel staff of 1030 were giver! their redundancy notices yesterday. . . - L The move, . which had been expected, involved staff at all levels and in almost all departments of the company. More notices are expected to be issued in the next few days. to staff who are now surplus to the requirements of filling the remaining orders. All the staff made redundant will receive redundancy pay on terms agreed earlier this week in negotiations with the company’s receivers. The Labour Department has made available its employment ’ services to help find jobs, or, if these are not immediately available, to speed the process of receiving the unemployment benefit. The staff involved include 41 in the Dunedin establishments (including 20 head office salaried staff), 47 at the Mosgiel mill, 49 at the Alford Forest mill at Ashburton, and another eight salesmen in various parts of New Zealand. Most are woollen workers, but some tradesmen and clerical workers are also, involved. Their notices are effective two weeks from today. Workers have been given the choice of working out the notice or taking the two weeks pay.
