New band in town
The Nares, a new Christchurch rock band, are out to help fill a gap. Tony Waine,. the bass guitarist for the new band, said that the rock music • scene .in Christchurch lacked a sense of direction. Once the idea of setting up a band in Christchurch had germinated, the Nares had problems finding a .guitarist. “ Tony Waine said the main difficulty was that none of. the guitarists considered were free to travel. In the end, Australia was decided as the best means of finding a guitarist and after contacting people in Melbourne ’and Sydney, Andy Dickson, from the hot Sydney band, Digit, offered his services. The Nares play a wide range of songs, including covers by Joe Jackson, XTC. The Angels, and The Police.
The band already had five original songs, and more were in the pipeline, Tony Waine said. “We hope to have a complete repertoire of
original material, and intend to tour in about three or four months.” The three-piece band played simple, dancing music, keeping it tight.
The’ Nares will make their official. debut at the Imperial Hotel this evening, and continue on Fri« day and Saturday nights.
