Container ‘plateau’
Since the introduction of container shipping in New Zealand in 1972, container traffic has steadily increased but now seems to have levelled off, having reached a plateau of near parity with conventional shipping. This has been reported by the Department of Trade and Industry which also noted that the development of ancillary container services, such as overseas transhipment alternatives to direct shipment, continue to Increase. , . . Changes to the shipping structure serving New Zealand last year resulted in more services on our trade routes, one exception being the Middle East' where shipping space was considerably reduced, says the reP °The sometimes controversial non-Conference A.B.C.
