Japan to cut whale imports
PA Wellington Japan’s Government has taken legal action to ban the import of whales and whale products from countries which are not members of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling. The action will strengthen regulations governing import procedures, according to a statement from the Japanese Information and Cultural Centre in Wellington. The “new and more stringent regulations,” which come into effect on July 21, are in accordance with the intent of the resolutions adopted at the twenty-ninth annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission, the statement says.
Certification/of the original source ofiany whalemeat imported into Japan, as well as the country from which the import is made, must be given before permission to import is granted. The Japanese Government expects that these measures will ban not only the direct importation, of whalemeat from non-I.W.C. countries, but also possible indirect countries.
