Home science development aid
For the first time in its history, the International Federation for Home Economics is meeting in our region this month. New Zealand will be well represented. The fourteenth congress convenes in the magnificent International Convention Centre in Manila from July 21 to July 26. , Home economists from around the world will discuss the Congress theme, “Home Economics: a responsible partner in development.” They will hear eminent speakers expound the . role of home economics in social and economic development. The congress will then formulate an action plan for the 1980 s. 'The federation,.' has a special concern /or the contributions its_ members can make to improving
the quality of life for rural families, especially rural women. At the 1979 World Conference on Agrarian Reform and Development, it made strong representations for the easing of the work-load of. women in developing countries so they could participate more fully in the economic, educational, and political life of their communities. Their points were incorporated into the WCARRD plan of action. New Zealand will be well represented at the congress. Miss Emily Carpenter, of Dunedin is a member of the IFHE executive which has planned the meeting. She will chair the session on “The . Implications of Development Issues for Home Economists.” Mrs Nancy Carr, of the School ~ of Home Science, in Dune-
din, will present a report to the projects session on home science involvement in the multi-disciplinary child development study in progress at the University of Otago. . r, , Mrs Judy Chambers, home economics curriculum officer, in the Department of Education, in Wellington will attend the Pre-Congress workshop on “Home Economists in Development” at the East West Centre in Hawaii before going to Manila. ( Others attending are active and retired teachers and lecturers in the home economics field. Arrangements for the congress; are in the' hands of a congress committee; of Philippines’ home economists "under Mrs Helen Benitez, a home economist, diplomat, and politician.
