Defiant England batting

NZPA-Reuter Manchester, The West Indies’ bid to win the third cricket test was foiled by England’s defiant batting on the final day at Old Trafford yesterday and the match ended in a draw.

England, trailing by 110 on the first innings, was 391 for seven in its second innings at the close. The touring team lead, 1-0, in the five-match series after a two-wicket victory in the first test at Nottingham. Their hopes, of extending the lead were, boosted when they dismissed Geoff Boycott for 86 early on, and again by the capture of three wickets for 19 shortly after lunch, which left England 199 ahead with three wickets and a possible 170

minutes left. 1 But between those moments of success, Clive Lloyd’s West Indians were frustrated by a spirited fifthwicket stand of 73 between Mike Gatting, who hit 56, and the captain, lan Botham, who made 35.

Evert after the touring team made its early afternoon breakthrough, it was again held up by an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 82 between Peter Willey, who scored an unbeaten 62, and John Emburey, with 28 jiot out. These two upset the final hopes of . the West Indies, who were without the injured fast bowler, Andy Roberts, for most of the day on a pitch which remained ideal for batting.
