Cochrane top in S.I.
Special correspondent With only two racing days left in the South Island before the 1979/80 racing season ends, representatives of Rex Cochrane’s Gore team have won $134,740 in stakes, Cochrane, as expected, gained two wins at Waimate last Saturday to become the first galloping trainer in New Zealand to train 1000 winners. The wins, by Folay and Palimony, increased Cochrane’s total for the season to 54. His team has been placed 117 times this term. Cochrane is third in the national trainers’ pre-
miership behind Graeme Rogerson (Te Rapa) and Dave O’Sullivan (Matamata) and is the leading South Island trainer, with about 22 wins more than Ted Winsloe who is also from Gore. Winsloe has been represented by 42 stakes winners from the 60 horses he has taken to the races this season. His best money-earner for the season has been the fine staying mare, Yipp’s Secret ($26,625). Double d’Or ($20,440), Hunting Call ($11,030), and the ill-fated Red Ensign ($7510) have been other substantial contributors.
