Mixed reaction to petition
A petition calling on the Government to restore Christchurch Airport’s revenue from airport dues and to approve the runway extension has the support of the Greymouth Borough Council, but the Eyre County Council has decided not to support it. Both councils had received copies of the petition from Mrs Mollie Clark, a Christchurch city councillor. The Greymouth council will place the petition in the Council Chambers and the Municipal Library. The Eyre County Council felt that it had already given its support to the
Christchurch City Council and could see no need to distribute a petition. Mrs Clark had said that the petition would ensure maximum support to urge the Government into action. ’ Cr C. H. Tyson said that the council had enough trouble administering its own business without becoming involved in the airport. <. Cr L. B. McKeage said that the council had a duty to support the region. The council decided to take no action on the request and received the letter.
