Clean sweep to Chch in inter-club squash

Christchurch kept its Wilson Shield hopes alive with a clean sweep over Sumner in the latest round of the men’s division one squash competition. Three team members won in straight games, including Bruce Trangmar who had his first victory in the last five matches. Only the. No. 2, Don Preston, dropped. a game. However, Rod Hayes played around a little against Sumner’s Ron Marshall and could have easily lost a game. He only won the second after four games balls and Marshall held three game balls in the third. At one stage Hayes served three times in a row without one being "good.” However, he played one remarkable shot in the third. Hayes shaped to play a forehand in the front court, then brought the racket round behind his back and hit a dead nick on the forehand wall. The competition leader. Burnside, had a narrow 6-4 win over another contender, High School Old Boys I, with the chances of further points going begging when a determined John Oakley (Old Bovs) beat Chris Wasley, 3-0. Earlier, the Old Boys captain, John Tolchard, showed perhaps his best form of the season when he outplayed Robin Clements with a flurry of nick winners.

The other "top six” contest was notable for the form of University’s top player, Barrie Matthews, who carried on from last Sunday when he had won 13 successive points to . beat Hamish Dowell in an open tournament final.

Matthews easily won the first game from the Canterbury champion, Craig Hibbert (Linwood), but had to come from 3-7 down to take the second with six points in one hand. Hibbert comfortably won the third, but Matthews (who hit a lot of winners in the match) got back in command again. And Dowell, at No. 2, had little trouble with Linwood's Howard Marshall, not allowing his opponent a single serve in the third game. Bryan Simpson (Christchurch

ID, upset by Dowell in the University tournament, found his form again with a convincing “grudge” win over Lin Sparks (Wigram-Lincoln) in the “bottom four” competition. Last time they met Simpson had managed a meagre four points, ■ Another, Christchurch II player. Jimmy Martin, was in good spirits after beating David Post for his second win of the season. ... , Suburbs pushed aside High School Old Boys II without undue difficulty, but Malcolm Thomson had a creditable fivegame win over George Balani for the losing team. In the women’s competition Burnside pulled itself up into second place thanks to a “whitewash” •of University. Saskia O’Brien’s upset win in four games over Jacqui James was the major feature. One University player, Adrienne Thomas, was decidedly unlucky to lose. She was leading Alrita Hooper two games to nil when struck by a ball In the eye and forced to retire.

High School Old Boys made almost sure of winning the women’s division title with a 6-4 win over Sumner. Kate Carpinter and Sharon Shannon had good wins for Sumner at numbers one and two, but Old Boys were too .strong in the bottom half. Suburbs, was one team to make progress up -the ladder, winning all four matches against Christchurch 11.
