“Alcohol disease” and alcohol-related problems have reached epidemic proportions in New Zealand. This is the opinion of Dr J. S. ROXBURGH, principal medical officer with responsibility for alcohol and drug matters with the Department of Health. In the first of two articles, he outlines the “slow and insidious development” of the epidemic and discusses the possible repercussions of further liberalising alcohol use and lowering the legal drinking age. Dr Roxburgh stresses that the views he expresses are his own and not necessarily those of the department.
