Jobless youth threaten upheaval’
PA . Invercargill ' New Zealand society is threatened with widespread ’ upheaval as a direct result of youth unemployment, according to Labour’s shadow Minister of Social Welfare (Mrs Whetu Tirikatene-Sulli-van). Speaking, at the opening of a Wayside youth centre at Mataura, she said youth unemployment was causing resentment, bitterness and disenchantment. Unless society moved now to 'tackle youth unemployment, ' change would be forced hy the victims.
“It is our choice. If we do not make changes vol"untarily, they will be forced, causing widespread social upheaval.” Labour was committed to a constructive programme of job creation and regional development to provide opportunities for employment, she said. “It will cost money, but it is money which we cannot afford not to spend.”
