Male motorists defended
PA Wellington Male drivers are most often found to be at fault m fatal accidents, but that does not mean that they are more dangerous on the roads than their female counterpa-ts, according to the Minister nf Police (Mr Gill), Mrs Mary Batchelor (Lab., Avon) has asked Mr Gill in Parliament to dispe the fallacy that women weie inferior drivers to men.
Mr Gill, answering questions on behalf of the Miniof Transport (Mr McLachlan), said that alth->ugh males were most often found at fault, that could be attributed to their greater numbers on the. road. He said that alcohol, excessive speed, and inexperience were the main causes oi road deaths. Failure to wear seat-belts was also a contributing factor.
Half the drivers in fatal accidents were aged unde? 25 and, per head of population, the 16 to 20 age-group was most ,at risk. .' < ‘ J!' Mr Gill said that the aggressive driving of males, in this age-group was clearly reflected in fatality statistics.
