Show of force
NZPA correspondent Tarawa, Kiribati The New Hebrides Chief Minister, the. Rev. Walter Lini, plans a show of military power by friendly countries for independence celebrations on July 30. There will be warships from France, the United States and Australia, Royal Marines from Britain, the Navy survey ship Monowai from New Zealand, and troops from Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
Father Lini said he saw this as a show of support for his Government. The visiting troops and • sailors would take part in parades, fireworks displays and sports meetings in seven different parts of the New Hebrides. “It is, in fact, a military display.” Asked if the show of force was needed by the Government to show its authority, Father Lini re-;,' plied: “Yes, in a way.”
