Coast barging under scrutiny
Westport reporter Representatives of the Marlborough Harbour Board have been invited to discuss the barging of West Coast resources to Picton for transhipment overseas, at the next meeting of, the Westport harbour advisory committee on August 7. A barge service could shift big tonnages from both Westport and Greymouth ports without- the need for extensive harbour works. However, it is thought that- the extra handling involved in barging to either Nelson or Picton makes the scheme unattractive compared with the cost of devel-
oping a mono-mooring buoy off Ngakawau. ; A decision favouring the mooring buoy is; expected from Wellington soon, probably with a promise that officials will;; continue .to study proposals., for the development of ah off-shore loading facility somewhere off the West Coast. Dates : for the placement of wave recorders off the North .Beach; at . . Westport and Ngakawau have still not been decided. i By the end of the year the experts .are expected to have| a reasonable idea of the suitability of the sites for further development.
